Abstract

This article is about the mounting threat posed by the new fifth wave of creationism to science, religion, and ultimately human knowledge. It tells of how more than 940 scientists from all 50 U.S. states and 30 countries have joined more than 13,000 U.S. clergy members to demonstrate “the theory of evolution is a foundational scientific truth, one that has stood up to rigorous scrutiny and upon which much of human knowledge and achievement rests. To reject this truth or to treat it as ‘one theory among others’ is to deliberately embrace scientific ignorance and transmit such ignorance to our children” (Christian Clergy Letter). This article, addressed to a scientific readership, is the counterpart to an article by Zimmerman written for a broader audience in Theology and Science (8(2), 2010).
