Abstract

The changing composition of the workforce in the United States raises fears that the country will soon suffer from a shortage of scientists and engineers. The author analyzes survival rates of college students and doctoral students to show that nondemographic trends must be investigated before we can understand the impact of the changing population on the production of scientists and engineers. He then discusses two other models of the projected supply and demand for engineers.
