Abstract

The i.r. and Raman spectra of the isotypic, crystalline actinid(IV) chlorides ThCl 4, PaCl 4, UCl 4 and NpCl 4 were measured in the range of 400-20 cm −1. The observed vibrations were assigned to the irreducible representations of the point group D 2 d and the valence, deformation and interaction force constants were calculated on the basis of a modified, generalized valence force field. The valence force constants increase, as the ionic radii of the actinide ions decrease.
