Abstract

Infrared and Raman spectra of the cyclic tetrasulfur tetraimide, (SNH) 4, and its deuteriated derivative, (SND) 4, are reported for the region 50–4000 cm −1. 39 of the 46 fundamental frequencies of both molecules have been observed and assigned in accordance with the molecular symmetry C 4 v . Intermolecular hydrogen bonds in solid tetrasulfur tetraimide influence the NH stretching frequencies only. Using a modified Urey—Bradley force field with 15 independent force constants good agreement between observed and calculated frequencies was obtained. Urey—Bradley as well as valence force constants are reported and discussed.
