Abstract

The i.r. and Raman spectra of potassium methyl xanthate- d 0 and - d 3 are reported. The A'-fundamentals are assigned on the basis of a normal coordinate analysis with a 21 parameter generalized valence force field. The force constants of the CO and the OC bonds are 4.85 and 4.90 mdyn A ̊ respectively. This shows that the canonical form CH 3O + = CS 2 2− makes an insignificant contribution to the structure of the methyl xanthate ion.
