Abstract

This chapter reviews the Schwinger Boson Mean Field Theory (SBMFT) for the quantum Heisenberg model. For bipartite lattices, the SBMFT is set up as the large N limit of the Heisenberg model, where the SU(N) spin operators are represented by N flavors of Schwinger bosons. For frustrated lattices, an Sp(N) representation is used. For the bipartite lattices, the mean field equations are solved, and the ground state wave function, order parameter and excitations dispersions are calculated. The SBMFT is used to calculate the temperature dependent staggered magnetization of the weakly coupled layered antiferromagnet.
