Abstract

Starting in autumn 2008, Master's studies will be offered at the Swiss universities of applied sciences. Two of these universities will offer a Master's degree within a continuing education program and also a regular Master's program in information science within their departments of information science. In addition the University of Zurich already offers a Master's program in library science and the University of Berne a Master's program in archival science. However, employers in Switzerland are uncertain whether there will be employment opportunities for Master's graduates in the future, as currently there are not enough suitable jobs available. In addition, the transition for Bachelors from universities of applied sciences to Master's study programs at Swiss universities presents a further problem due to regulations which are soon to come into effect. Nevertheless, for such a small country, a broad spectrum of studies has developed over the past few years for students of information sciences.
