Abstract

Shalom Schwartz, developer of the Schwartz values dimensions, was born in Hempstead, New York on January 1, 1936. Schwartz's eclectic educational background prepared him well as a significant theorist, researcher, and preeminent scholar in cross‐cultural psychology. He received his A.B. in comparative literature from Columbia University in 1957 while also studying Hebrew literature and language at the Jewish Theological Seminary, receiving his B.H.L. in 1958. Continuing his studies at Columbia University's Teachers College, Schwartz received a master's degree in social psychology and group development in 1962. During his time at Columbia he also spent one year in Jewish studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. With a desire to pursue advanced Jewish studies, Shalom returned to New York to the Rabbinical School at the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS) before attending the University of Michigan where he received the Ph.D. in social psychology in 1967.
