Abstract

The present work deals with the relationship between writing and picture in the paintings of western and Arab artists in the second half of the 20th century and how writing has been assigned a new function in the work of art, which was absent beforehand in both the religious and secular arts. The new role of writing in the picture became a substantial element, instead of serving as a legend before. In some works of art from the second half of the 20th century, letters, words and sentences became the main artistic pictorial element. At the same time Arab artists discovered again the figurative use of the writing, but with a modern view, which differed completely from their ancestors view regarding the traditional Arab-Islamic art of writing. The work also focuses on the factors, which exerted influence on the works of western artists, in particular, motives from the non-European cultures. In addition to the works of the modern Arab artists which have influences from both of the modern European art and the Islamic culture. In the works of Arab artists the struggle to find a specifically Arab pictographic language is clearly recognized. The work describes how the writing and the written word became substantial motives and expressional means in the modern painting. The artists used characters in a completely new manner, in order to communicate with their public.
