Abstract

Summary An investigation into the vocational preferences of secondary modern school children, aged 13–15, in which answers to questionnaires were related to intelligence test findings, has brought to light the following facts about boys' attitudes to careers in the building industry. i. All the building trades except masonry and plastering were fairly popular occupations among these school leavers. ii. Carpentry was outstandingly popular, being exceeded only by mechanical and electrical engineering. iii. Most boys showed themselves able to distinguish their vocational choice from vocational phantasies; in the latter building trades were much less evident than in the former. iv. Interest in building work seemed to have developed only after the age of 11. v. 71·9 per cent. of the boys made reasonable choices in view of their general intelligence.
