Abstract

Rosoff and Spencer discuss how their analysis of American and British school and college stories further develops the concept of the transnational to include characteristics and ideas of femininity that transcend nation. They expand the increasingly sophisticated analysis that has, to date, situated the stories within national boundaries. They offer a new approach to understanding the popularity of the genre and the significance of the stories as informal education. A detailed explanation of how feminist theories that interrogate the boundaries between essentialist and constructionist interpretations of femininity can work alongside transnational insights completes the chapter.
