Abstract

In this article, a thesis has been claimed that school failure – especially in mathematics – is still present and remain a pedagogical challenge for the education. In the substantiation of the thesis, a set of arguments resulting from literary analysis and available findings, including thematic reports, has been quoted. The rank of the phenomenon and the scale of the problem, proving a “plague of mathematical illiteracy”, has been signalized. Following D. Firsh’s advice, an attempt to answer the question “What is mathematics? What is it about?” has been taken. Thus, mathematics has been presented as science and as an academic subject. The peculiarity of mathematical education has been noted. It has been reminded that the title theme should occupy a deserved place in academic research, especially of applied nature
