Abstract

Who can resist a birthday celebration? When schools celebrate birthdays the public relations benefits are immeasurable. Birthdays celebrated every five, ten, or twenty-five years can easily be adapted to regular school activities, or they can become more elaborate. Open houses, PTA meetings, and musical programs are naturals for birthday piggy-backing. Add cake, punch, coffee, buttons, cards, balloons, streamers, and banners to create an instant birthday party. Mix pictures and news releases and a birthday PR blitz is born. School board meetings can be held at the highlighted school with special student presentations. These can be as simple as the sealing of a time capsule or as elaborate as a special musical production with original songs keyed to the school's history and community. For those willing to put forth extra effort during the celebration year, a myriad of programs can be added to the schedule: hobby show, talent show, Arbor Day tree planting, spelling bee, bake-off, grandparents' day, reunions, parade
