Abstract
Titular colonicity (frequency of colons in titles) has been hypothesized as the primary correlate of scholarly character in journal publication. Using data from 25,000 titles in journals of ecology, aquatic sciences, educational psychology, and literary criticism, I compare the ecological sciences with the social sciences. No significant differences in scholarly character were detectable between aquatic and terrestrial ecology, but ecological sciences were found to be less scholarly than social sciences.
