Abstract

One of the areas of the performing arts most neglected by scholars has been the American Musical Theatre. I emphasize the term because, while most theatre historians make note of the musical as being one of America's important contributions to the arts, few have bothered to investigate the field in any depth. The dancers and choreographers who have worked in this idiom have probably suffered the most, with rare exceptions such as Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly and the dance director Busby Berkeley-film work is more accessible, since much of the material is available for study. However many of the early films have already crumbled to dust. Material on the Broadway musical is often difficult to come by since routines and dance numbers (especially for stars and soloists) died with the last performance and were not passed on to the next generation of dancers, as has happened with sections of many Petipa and Bournonville ballets.
