Abstract

Taking its cues from Peter von Matt’s distinction between a classical and a modern scheme of seduction, this essay discusses the male seducers and the plot patterns in a play and a novella by two major Austrian writers from the restoration period before 1848. It examines the transformation of the sentimental seduction plot in Franz Grillparzer’s dramaturgy via the example of Die Argonauten (1821) and explores the construction of male virginity and the seduction of the gaze in Adalbert Stifter’s novella Das alte Siegel (1844).
