Abstract

The genus Schizostachyum was described by Nees in 1829, based on one species, S. blumei (as 'blumii'). Since then many new species have been described, so that there are now about 40 50 species. The genus is found mainly in tropical Asia, from southern China, throughout the Malesian Region, extending to the Pacific Islands with the majority of the species in Malesia. The genus, possessing sympodial rhizomes, erect culms and indeterminate inflorescences, is characterised by thinwalled culms, several to many branches of the same length at each culm node, absence (usually) of glumes in the spikelet, and the slender ovary with a long glabrous style. The new species, S. khoonmengii, is related to S. brachycladum Kurz, a widespread and much used species, growing wild or cultivated.
