Abstract

There are few books in which individuals who have experienced psychosis write not only about their experiences of psychosis but also about their lives. This book, which explores and challenges some of the values that have shaped and continue to influence psychiatric care of people who experience psychosis, opens with an engaging and unique personal account of experiencing psychosis. This chapter is the main strength of the book. The author takes the reader on a journey of his life, spanning from childhood through to adulthood including his episodes of illness and recovery. In the last section of this chapter titled ‘The Synthesis of Psychosis’, the author uses his personal experience to raise some pertinent issues on the causation and effects of mental illness. It leaves the reader with no other choice but to reflect on them. I totally agree with the author when he says, referring to this section, that ‘you will not read this in books’.
