Abstract

Research on expressed emotion (EE) is considered in the historical context of writings about disturbed family communication patterns and schizophrenia. More recent findings about the interaction between EE and schizophrenic relapse and the relevance of these findings for both clients and their relatives/carers are also summarized. The author offers recommendations for developing programs that focus on the client's social skills deficits.
