Abstract

Through consideration of some of the epistemological limitations of the concept of resilience, as well as that of family resilience, the article proposes the notion of eco-resilience in order to highlight the importance of relational factors beyond the strict limits of the family. The legitimacy of this notion is illustrated by applying it to the highly complex field of schizophrenia and, in particular, by relating it to the clinical profile of good prognosis with respect to this disorder; this is done by taking into account gender, family, social and cultural aspects, as well as the development of symptoms. We describe the case of an upper-class Ecuadorian woman, diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, and her only daughter, who is healthy and socially successful. Eco-resilience is revealed through both the relatively benign development of the disorder in the mother and the relational immunity of the daughter.
