Abstract

Three prominent health challenges affecting our society include cancer, diabetes, and antibiotic-resistant infections. Despite the availability of conventional drugs for these conditions, the pervasive problem of multidrug resistance significantly diminishes their effectiveness. Consequently, it is paramount to prioritize the development of novel drug compounds endowed with improved and desirable therapeutic properties. Utilizing metal-based drugs has proven to be an effective strategy in the realm of anticancer treatment and this approach holds significant promise for the enhanced treatment of multi-resistant infections and diabetes. Schiff bases, being bioactive organic compounds, have attracted considerable attention. Researchers have been actively exploring the potential therapeutic applications of metallo-based Schiff bases, including heterocyclic molecules and/or aromatic rings adorned with diverse functional groups across various illnesses. This review catalogs (2010 to 2023) the classification of metal-based Schiff base compounds that incorporate heterocyclic rings and/or aromatic rings with diverse functional groups, which possess antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anticancer qualities. These insights can assist the medical chemist in identifying suitable drug candidates for developing innovative pharmaceuticals.
