Abstract

Schiff bases and their metal complexes have shown a wide range of industrial as well as biological applications. Herein, ligand E-N'-(1-(2-hydroxy-6-methyl-4-oxo-4H-pyran-3-yl)Methylidene)-4-isonicotinohydrazide 1 was synthesized by the condensation of 4-isonicotinio-hydrazide with dehydroacetic acid (dha) in refluxing ethanol. The obtained ligand was further reacted with cadmium and manganese metal ions to isolate complexes 2 and 3. The ligand 1 and complexes 2 and 3 were characterized by UV–vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR and elemental analysis, respectively. The results indicated coordination of the ligand with the metal center through dha hydroxal group oxygen atom after deprotonation, iminic nitrogen and amidic oxygen atom and stabilized by forming ONO type of complexes. The nonelectrolyte nature of the ligand 1 and complexes 2 and 3 was confirmed by conductance measurements. Results of Eosin yellow dye degradation based on the absorption bands indicated 50.6% removal in 44 min and 65.3% in 60 min by complexes 2 and 3, respectively. Further, the complexes were tested for their antioxidant potential and complex 3 came up with high antioxidant potential as compare to ligand. Keeping in view the current study, Schiff base metal complexes can be considered as best candidate for dye degradation and antioxidant applications and research projects can be further extended to investigate reported metal complexes.
