Abstract
ABSTRACT‘Art and Criticism’ (‘Kunst und Kritik’), an unpublished draft essay dating from 1911, is Schenker's theory of music criticism in all but name, revealing his wider views about the cultural practice of music journalism. As such, it can be read as the foundation for his subsequent thinking on the matter. It also offers a glimpse into how his thinking on a subject evolved: he filed the draft in a folder together with an eclectic assortment of notes with references to literary works, as well as clippings of newspaper articles on music, art and literary criticism by the foremost contributors to the public debate on criticism at the turn of the century. Through a close reading of both ‘Art and Criticism’ and its paper trail in the Schenker Archive, I seek to shed light on Schenker's thinking as a process by showing that he engaged with the thinkers of his time and demonstrating the extent to which his rejection of journalism was stimulated by the ideas of his contemporaries.
