Abstract

This chapter explains the planning processes. Planning is critical and underpins effective teaching, playing an important role in shaping pupils’ understanding and progression. It is the area of work where teachers can bring their passion for a subject and their desire to make a difference together. Three levels of planning are particularly relevant to teachers work in the classroom – the scheme of learning, which outlines lessons for a term or a year or so; the unit of learning, which outlines a group of lessons around a particular topic; and the lesson plan for individual lessons or a short sequence of lessons. Scheme of learning also be called the ‘programme of study’ or ‘scheme of work’ and is usually designed at the department level. The lesson plan provides an outline of one lesson within a unit of learning which covers a number of lessons.
