Abstract

Scheduling problems with resource allocation constraints generally belong to the large class of NP-complete problems. An important group of such problems concerns Timetable Construction (TC) for people and tools. This paper proposes an efficient approach to TC using neural networks with Backward Lateral Inhibitions (BLI) for constraints management. The frequent and complex probem of the school TC, which is used to illustrate our work, is presented. TC can be considered as a scheduling problem with disjunctive constraints, and the neural network model with BLI is well-adapted to it. This neural network model and the solution chosen to solve the TC problem are described. A software, written in C language using a personal computer, has been implemented to solve the TC problem. This software, as well as its performances, are presented; it can process up to 3.5 MEG simultaneous constraints within a few seconds.
