Abstract
In this chapter, the batch process scheduling problem is discussed and approaches to its solution are outlined. The approaches considered include approximate techniques, model-based optimization methods and combined continuous/discrete simulation methods. Model-based scheduling techniques and combined simulation methods are complementary decision-support technologies which offer the best prospects for the routine creation and validation of economical and practical schedules. The extension of this methodology to perform design optimization is feasible given available commercial tools. The material for this chapter was drawn from several sources, especially [1–5].
