Abstract

The expression of and influencing of emotional states are basic functions of the composition and reception of music. Despite this, the musical treatment of shame as an emotion is scarcely existent in western musical culture. For many reasons, a purely instrumental realisation cannot succeed, with the exception of texted music and music within a scenic performance. Shame and surrogate shame in music relate mainly to reproduction and performance.
