Abstract

This paper introduces a Self-powered Cardiac and Activity Vigilant Monitoring (SCAVM) system that continuously senses and wirelessly streams electrocardiogram (ECG) and motion data to a smartphone. SCAVM consumes only 370 μW on average and is powered solely by indoor solar, allowing it to maintain its monitoring at a sampling rate such that no critical events are missed. The fully integrated system incorporates an energy harvesting and power management unit, an ECG analog-front end (AFE), an accelerometer, and a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) System on Chip (SoC) for data collection and wireless communication. SCAVM represents a significant advancement in self-powered multi-modal sensing with continuous vigilant operation and smartphone/cloud interface capabilities, providing a feasible solution for long-term patient monitoring beyond the clinic.
