Abstract

The problem of diffraction of electromagnetic waves by an infinite array of conducting cylinders has been of great interest in the areas of optics, acoustics and electromagnetics. A numerical integral-equation technique is presented for analysis of this problem for any arbitrary cylinder cross-section at all desired angles of incidence. The solution of the integral equation gives the surface field over one element of the grating from which the reflected and the transmitted mode amplitudes are conveniently calculated. Numerical results obtained are checked against those based on multiple-scattering technique which indicate the limits of accuracy and reliability of the latter technique. Further numerical results are obtained which indicate the usefulness of these structures as passive repeaters and shielding structures.
