Abstract

Total scattering cross sections Q were measured for Cs atoms velocity selected from thermal beams scattered by He, Kr, and Xe gases. Over the available range of relative velocities, the observed Cs–Kr and Cs–Xe cross sections vary in accordance with scattering by a central field attractive potential of the form U(r) = − C6r−6. Observed values of C6 in units of 10−58 erg·cm6 are 4.7 ± 0.4 and 8.1 ± 0.7 for the Kr and Xe interactions, respectively, and are in good agreement with available theoretical estimates. The velocity range of the Cs–He measurements was too small to permit accurate determination of the force law, but the total cross section at a relative velocity of 1.30 × 105 cm/sec was found to be 177 ± 9 Å2.
