Abstract

We investigate the behavior of charged dielectric spherical particles in an external electromagnetic field. We suppose that the charged particles concentrated on the surface can migrate freely along the surface. With this assumption, we find the location of the dipole plasma resonance, and for this we find an accurate solution of the equation for the vertex part in the chaotic phase approximation. We calculate the damping of the surface plasmon due to its temperature break-up on singleparticle excitations. We study the effects of the plasma resonance on the scattering of electromagnetic waves by particles of the elastic channel. Since the plasmon damping is weak, the elastic scattering cross section may increase by many orders of magnitude near the resonance. We discuss the possibility of detecting this resonance experimentally.
