Abstract

When the size of a charged dust particle is very small, application of probe theory becomes difficult and the dust would have a Coulomb field different from that predicted by probe theory. Under the condition that the dust particle can behave like a charged particle, Coulomb collisions of an ion beam with charged fine particles are investigated. Using a theoretical model, in which the effect of the Coulomb logarithm is taken into account, the dependence of the scatter rate of beam particles on beam energy and plasma density, spatial energy variation, angular profiles of the beam energy distribution, and beam loss rate are calculated. Finally, a method to estimate the electric charge on a fine particle is proposed.
