Abstract
A classical hydrodynamical model is proposed which leads to inelastic scattering of helium atoms by the free surface of liquid helium. The qualitative features are in agreement with preliminary experimental results of EDWARDS’ group. The model predicts also that the scattering of rotons impinging on the surface from below will be elastic or nearly elastic.
