Abstract

Theoretical studies on two-dimensional photonic crystal (PC) slabs are presented. A scattering matrix approach which allows a complete modeling of the electromagnetic properties of structures made of layers of dielectric materials with planar periodicity. The slab structure consists of a triangular lattice of air holes drilled through an InP suspended membrane. Band structures and inverse quality factor variation of the modes are calculated. The effect of membrane thickness or the air-filling factor are also studied. The method is shown to be a powerful tool for the analysis of guided and quasi-guided (resonant) modes in PC slabs of finite thickness either suspended in air or on a substrate.
