Abstract

An E- or H-polarized plane wave is diffracted by an infinite cylinder whose uniform cross section is a convex polygon. The magnitude of kd where k is the propagation constant and d any representative cylinder dimension, is assumed large. Then if the scattering cross section is expressed in inverse powers of kd, general formulas are developed for the lowest-order term immediately following the geometric term. These formulas are shown to yield the known results for diffraction by a wide strip and their use is illustrated for the case of a cylinder of equilateral triangular section.
