Abstract

This study investigates the scattering characteristics of a high impedance surface (HIS) illuminated by a broadband lightening electromagnetic wave. Two different artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) unit cells were arranged in a checkerboard structure to implement a high impedance surface. Both 0° and 180° reflection phase difference near its resonance frequency conditions were analyzed. A time-domain full-wave simulation was carried out to calculate the electromagnetic fields and the far-field patterns of this structure. The scattering patterns of the structure were measured in an electromagnetic anechoic chamber. To illustrate the scattering behavior of this high impedance surface, a simple array factor formula is adopted to show difference of the scattering characteristics. Both the numerical and experimental results have been achieved and compared in this study.
