Abstract

The exact solution of the diffraction of plane sound waves by a rigid prolate spheroid coated with a confocal sheath of penetrable acoustic material is obtained. Results are given in terms of spheroidal functions. Detailed numerical computations for the radiation patterns of the scattered wave are carried out for certain acoustic parameters. It is found that the coating alters quite significantly the scattering characteristics of an incident wave. Furthermore, because of the coupling between each expansion coefficient for the scattered wave with all expansion coefficients for the incident wave for the coated spheroid case, the Watson transformation technique cannot be used directly to yield expressions that are applicable at high frequencies.
