Abstract

This paper proposes a method for estimating the number density of specular scatterers in the presence of unresolvable diffuse scatterers. The proposed method is an extension of a method previously developed by Sleefe and Lele and was originally applied to tissue medium containing a single class of scatterers [ll . It is shown that if the ratio of diffuse to specular scattering intensities is known, the number density of the specular scatterers can be correctly estimated. The method has been applied to computer-simulated echo signals and the accuracy of the method is demonstrated over a wide range of the relative diffuse scattering intensity.
