Abstract

Tumors of the scaphoid bone are very rare and their treatment has not been well established. A 9-year-old child presenting with progressive enlargement and deviation of the wrist was found to have osteochondroma of the scaphoid. It was treated by total scaphoidectomy and arthroplasty was accomplished with the tendon of flexor carpi radialis. The tendon strip was coiled along the K-wire across the scaphoid cavity. In the subsequent follow-up of 4.5 years, the result was satisfactory in terms of growth, deformity correction as well as functional recovery although there was the decrease of the carpal height ratio. It is concluded that the modified Anchovy procedure can be applied to this situitation in the children.
