Abstract

The basal surface of epithelial cells in the normal oral mucosa and cancer lesions were investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The basal lamina and collagen fibers having been completely removed by strong alkali digestion, the true basal surfaces of the epithelium and cancer lesions were demonstrated in three dimensions. Visible on the outer surface of the nest of cancer cells was a flowerlike structure, presumably the connecting portion of the neighboring cancer nest.
