Summary Three dimensional morphology of erythrocytes from several vertebrate species has been studied with the scanning electron microscope. These are illustrated and major differences described. From the results obtained, the extrapolation of observations made on one particular species to cover a taxonomic group as a whole appears to be unwarranted.
