Abstract

[10361-84-9] ScCl3 (MW 151.3) InChI = 1S/3ClH.Sc/h3*1H;/q;;;+3/p-3 InChIKey = DVMZCYSFPFUKKE-UHFFFAOYSA-K (can be used as a Lewis acid in a variety of reactions including Mukaiyama-type aldol reactions, thioacetalization of aldehydes, and as catalyst in nucleophilic 1,4-conjugate addition reactions) Alternative Name: scandium chloride, scandium trichloride. Physical Data: mp 960 °C, density 2.39 g mL−1 at 25 °C (lit.) Solubility: partially soluble in alcoholic solvents such as methanol (45.5 mg/100 mg solvent) and ethanol (37.3 mg/100 mg solvent).1 Form Supplied in: white solid. Purification Method: purified by sublimation by heating at 850 °C to form white crystals. Preparative Methods: anhydrous scandium chloride can be prepared by reacting scandium oxide with hydrochloric acid under reflux condition, followed by pH adjustment with ammonium hydroxide solution until pH 3. The anhydrous form can be achieved by drying the white powder in vacuum oven at 150 °C for 3 h and then at 500 °C for 30 min. Solid formed can be further purified by sublimation by heating at 850 °C to form white crystals.2 (1) Handling, Storage, and Precautions: hygroscopic solid; handle in a fume hood under nitrogen atmosphere using proper PPE.
