Abstract

Abstract Four species of Leptochiton are described and illustrated. L. arcticus, generally regarded as a junior objective synonym of L. asellus, proves to be a good species on account of several discriminating characteristics. L. cancellatus, reported from Norway by G.O. Sars 1878, and subsequent authors, turns out to be a hitherto undescribed species differing from L. cancellatus by growing larger, being higher elevated, in the granulation of the tegmentum, and in the perinotum armature. As a humble tribute to G.O. Sars it is named L. sarsi sp. nov. Of L. asellus a lectotype is designated from the ‘Museo Spengleriano’ in Zoologisk Museum, Kobenhavn. The type of L. alveolus has been traced in the Mollusca collection of Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet, Stockholm, that of L. arcticus in Zoologisk Museum, Oslo.
