Abstract

In an informal interview, Lasser and Gates discuss the latter's wide scope of projects and his role as a cultural catalyst, notably in inner-city Chicago. In particular, the tools at Gates' disposal are brought into focus: from traditional potters' and woodworkers' implements to more abstract ones such as Gates' use of “making” and his awareness of history for building relationships, fostering social responsibility, and harnessing the transformative power of creative practice.
