Abstract

The Kolmogorov equation, which is an exact relationship between the second-order structure function and the third-order structure function , is applied to study the relative scaling of against according to the extended self-similarity (ESS) method. It is found that the relative ESS scaling exponent is greater than the real (or theoretical) inertial range scaling exponent of in the case of normal scaling as well as anomalous scaling : when and when . Therefore, the experimental and numerical results favours the Kolmogorov 2/3 law rather than anomalous scaling . Previously the results were interpreted as clear evidence of anomalous scaling based upon the assumption that .
