Abstract

Recently Narasimhan has proposed an adjustment to Saaty's solution for scaling square judgment matrices consisting of pairwise ratio comparisons. He recommends that prior to the application of Saaty's solution, the judgment matrix be adjusted to satisfy the supertransitivity requirement. The present note shows that the proposed adjustment is equivalent to an alternative solution to this problem, based upon calculation of the geometric means of the matrix rows. Thus, the proposed adjustment should be regarded as an alternative to Saaty's solution rather than a preliminary stage. Finally, four solutions to this scaling problem are compared and the need for further research in this area is reiterated.
