Abstract
Summary Seven scale insects are recorded from apples in New Zealand, five of them causing red marks on fruit. They are San José scale (Quadraspidiotus perniciosus (Comst.)), oyster shell scale (Q. ostreaeformis (Curtis)), mussel scale (Lepidosaphes ulmi (L.)), red scale (Aonidiella aurantii (Mask.)), Parlatoria pittospori Mask., P. virescens Mask. of McKenzie, and greedy scale (Aspidiotus rap ax (Comst.)). Oyster-shell scale is recorded from New Zealand for the first time. Red scale is recorded here for the first time causing red marks on apples. P. virescens is recorded for the first time on fruit. San Jose is the most important economically of these scales because it is most widespread and produces three generations each season.
