Abstract

The scalable redundant inter-processor communication network (SRIPCN) architecture for an edge router system is herein proposed. Nowadays, the use of a network processor (NP) is generalized in the high-speed network devices to keep pace with the demands of the exponentially growing Internet traffic. To provide a reliable system operation that uses an NP, a distributed system has been developed by separating the control plane and the data-forwarding plane. The future distributed system should be more easily extended. In this paper, the control plane architecture, called SRIPCN, is proposed and evaluated. The results showed that when compared with a conventional IPC method, SRIPCN not only provided an effective approach to the high availability of the control plane, but could also improve its performance.
