Abstract
The texture modulation of cephalopods is controlled by cutaneous muscles calledpapillae. We recently developed Twisted Spiral Artificial Muscles (TSAMs) that mimic the response ofpapillaemuscles. However, the current manufacturing method is time-consuming and prone to human error. A scalable and automated manufacturing system capable of efficiently fabricating TSAMs is proposed in this paper. This system reduces the manufacturing time by 75% and allows the fast production of a large number of TSAMs with repetable performance, that can be easily embedded into a soft matrix to produce self-morphing skins for drag control or refreshable 3D displays.
