Abstract

compared to the conventional full search block matching, by using nonlinear mapping functions to describe the co-ordinate correspondence of related pixels in the two pictures. Introduction: Images of a scene taken from slightly ditferent viewpoints have geometric differences which are referred to as stereo disparity. In the past, disparity estimation has been used as a cue for inferring depth information of a scene and a number of efficient algorithms have been developed for this purpose [l]. Most of them attempt to find disparity vectors at all feature points derived from the two images. Various image transmission applications however, such as geosciences, autonomous navigation, surveillance and 3-D television, require transmission and/or storage of the stereo pair images. For efficient transmission/storage, an image com- pression technique can be used to reduced the total bit rate, by taking advantage of the similarities between the images of the stereo pair [2].
